Songs of an American Dreamer, the new live-in-the-studio album and DVD from Country Music Hall of Fame inductee Jimmy Fortune, is out today via Gaither Music. The 14-track collection weaves together Fortune’s musical journey—from his childhood in Virginia to his chart-topping tenure with The Statler Brothers and his celebrated solo career—with themes of faith, perseverance, and deep gratitude.
The project’s focus track, “I Believe,” is among the most powerful in Fortune’s career, drawing from deeply personal roots.
“‘I Believe’ has been one of the biggest songs of my career because the song has touched so many people. It was simply inspired by my mother who was a prayer warrior and who never gave up praying for all her children, her grandchildren, and her great-grandchildren,” said Fortune. “She also never gave up on a son like me who went astray many times in his life but thanks to her prayers, I always found my way back through her words. She taught me not to run from God but to run to God, and so I was thankful for that upbringing that she instilled in me.”
Recorded live in-studio, Songs of an American Dreamer pairs Fortune’s signature tenor with intimate arrangements and heartfelt storytelling. The album features fresh recordings of Statler Brothers classics—like “Elizabeth,” “My Only Love,” and “More Than a Name on a Wall”—alongside newer solo works and personal favorites.
“I have been in the process of writing a book called Stories of an American Dreamer over the last few years,” Fortune said. “In the process, I figured I should create my next project, Songs of an American Dreamer, which would include songs that shaped my life. Each of the 14 songs tells a story. Some tell the story of my life growing up in Virginia and some of the time with the Statler Brothers and up to the present time. I hope you enjoy it.”
The companion DVD, hosted by longtime friends Ricky Skaggs and Sharon White, includes behind-the-scenes stories and performances that bring each song to life.
Fortune’s memoir, Jimmy Fortune: The Story of an American Dreamer, is slated for release in conjunction with the album on June 27.
Fortune is currently living in Tennessee, writing, touring, and continuing to share his message through music.
